PB1A Sale Signs
When thinking of what a genre is,
it is a lot more than just a peculiar movie type—such as comedy and drama.
Genres can be anything that is textually seen. Though there are varieties of
genres, one genre that I am familiar with are ‘Sale Signs and Advertisements’.
My familiarity with them comes from my job experience at GNC. I work there as a
sales associate and we often have weekend sales consisting of BOGO50, BOGO80,
and even sometimes BOGOFREE deals. But, what makes an advertisement and a sale
sign, an advertisement and a sale sign?
An advertisement or a sale sign is
a genre because of its features and conventions. When you look at a GNC sale
sign, you’ll notice that that there are some with just “SUPER SALE” written and
then there are specific signs that would say “BUY 1 AT REGULAR PRICE GET 1 50%
OFF or BUY 1 AT REGULAR PRICE GET 1 UP TO 80% OFF”. These signs are identical
but have totally different meanings and what they could bring to the table.
When looking at the basic “SUPERSALE” sign, it is noticeable how broad it is. The sign could mean anything to GNC customers and the sale can be basically anything that store has planned. Customers may go into the store and leave empty handed and disappointed if what they were hoping to buy at the store is not actually on sale. By misleading customer’s expectations for this large “SUPER SALE” that the store is having, they could easily find themselves losing the customer’s trust in the store itself and never coming back.
To get the most out of a sale sign,
having them specify the type of sale and promotion that store may be having
would certainly help the customer out ahead of time. For example, the signs
that read out “BUY 1 AT REGULAR PRICE GET 1 50% OFF or BUY 1 AT REGULAR PRICE
GET 1 UP TO 80% OFF” specify what kind of promotion that the store is having.
Both of the signs show a large scale, bold font, and bright red and white
colors. They have the same description on both sides so that when they are
placed on the sides of roads, they are seen both directions. The signs
certainly stand out but I still believe that one is better than the other. Even
though both signs express the type of sale that they are having, the BOGO80
sign states that there are certain exclusions within the sale such as protein
bars, drinks, and some brands that don’t have a flexible margin enough to
discount. This way, customers are aware that the sale can be up to 80% off and aren’t
totally disappointed if one of their products is not on sale since they had the
initial heads up that not everything is totally on sale. While a customer may
not be pleased with what they came in for, the sign reads “NEW LOWER PRICES!”
that could potentially get the customer excited a different product or
something similar towards what they were looking for. The BOGO50 sign could
also excite the customer as the text boldly reads “TODAY ONLY”. A potential
customer might see it the day off and could take advantage of the sale given
that its only 1 day.
Small little details are what makes
a sale sign, a sale sign. Most, if not all, GNC super sale signs have large
lettering and descriptions of what the sale may hold and what it excludes. When
they are seen placed outside on the edge of sidewalks, the sign’s intent is to
get the customers excited and to give them an opportunity to save a lot of
money. They are easy to read, easy to see from a far, and hold a value to what
the store is doing for the day they are placed outside.
-Hope everyone enjoyed reading how a sale sign is a textual genre

Jake, i thought your blog was very well written and incorporated some very strong examples of of textual genre relating to GNC signs and advertisements.I feel that your prior knowledge with GNC really helped you take your examples to the next level. For example, your usage of sales knowledge shows the audience what kind of impacts that the sale sign can have on business. In conclusion, your blog really helped me see what it like to be on the business side of advertisement rather than always seeing things on the consumer side.
